Join us as dr. ir. Gerco Onderwater gives a short online lecture about antimatter.

Each student of mathematics knows that x-squared = 4 has TWO solutions: x = 2 and x = -2. Both solutions are equally valid. When theoretical physics tried to merge two of the cornerstones of modern physics, quantum mechanics and special relativity, it was precisely such a square that was encountered. Accepting the rigor of mathematics implied accepting that there are two solutions rather than just a single one. Even the greatest minds at the time were challenged coming to terms with the physical reality of two solutions, a reality that was soon vindicated by experiment. Nowadays, the similarity and difference of matter and antimatter, as the two solutions are commonly referred to, are among the most thoroughly studied in particle physics. In this lecture, we will view some of the surprising matter-antimatter phenomena and explore a number of spectacularly sensitive experiments.
