Coupling gravity to a scalar field: towards the mo 6/19/15
To model cosmic inflation and to address the present time accelerating expansion of the universe, one often adds a scalar field to the theory of General Relativity. This should be done in such a way that the notorious Ostrogradski instability is avoided. A natural question to ask would be: what is the most general theory of a scalar field coupled to General Relativity, that is free from this instability? As of today, the answer remains unknown. In this talk I will review the basics of such theories and explain the nature of the unwanted instability and how it can be circumvented. Lastly, I will comment on the difficulties one encounters in trying to construct the most general healthy theory.
